What, if anything, should be done to encourage more Sonoma County parents to have their children vaccinated?
The refusal to vaccinate children is a symptom of a troubled society. We live in a nation who’s people lack trust in government, business and science. Far too often we have seen prescription drugs get a rubber stamp of approval by a government agency like the FDA. Then we find the drug was improperly tested and proved harmful or fatal.
In the 90’s the FDA had a series of drugs it approved, such as: Lotronex, Redux, Raxar, Posicor, Duract, Rezulin and Propulsid that all caused severe reactions or death in patients. It was later found that the FDA had prior knowledge of these dangers and yet still approved the drugs. Propulsid was often given to infants to treat Gastric Reflux. It was later found that the FDA knew Propusid was not approved for use, with children, but never issued any warning to doctors. Because of this error by the FDA eight children died from the drug.
In the midst of our current economic crisis we have alarming revelations of cozy relationships with congress and big business. Millions of dollars have been given to fund campaigns of presidential, senate, and congressional candidates by the pharmaceutical industry. Special deals have been given by corporations to members of congress for favorable treatment toward particular business deals, or legislation. A great example is Senator Dodd, who was given a special mortgage deal by Countrywide Mortgage, who was unloading their bad mortgage deals on Fannie Mae. We then see once again that Senator Dodd was in another controversy with AIG. Senator Dodd authored an amendment to a bill for the payment of bonuses to AIG executives, which he denied and then later admitted to. Then to our surprise, which I say sarcastically, it was found out that Senator dod received thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from AIG executives.
With all the error, corruption, greed, and unhealthy relationship between big business and government is it wrong for parents to distrust any medical treatment promoted or endorssed by government officials? Putting to the side the religious, or naturopathic issues concerning vaccination, we must address the issue of trust. Trust between people, government and business.
We can deal with the naturopathic and religious issues with education and dialogue. We can look at the history and statistics of other nations that have halted vaccination and as a result seen increased cases of disease. However, how can we have real honest dialogue or discuss the facts, and statistics if parents have a feeling of distrust toward government health officials?
To reach a point when we will see more parents accepting vaccinations as a valid protection against disease, we must first get government to clean up it’s act. Trust is crucial in any relationship, especially among the people and it’s government.
Regional meetings with doctors, parents, health officials and business needs to take place. Both sides of the issue needs to voice their concerns, and facts. Parents cannot and should never be coerced to have their children vaccinated, but time should be taken to educate parents. With the past history among government agencies like the FDA, and fatal drugs being marketed by pharmaceuticals, parents need assurance of safety. The burden is on government and business to prove the facts, and safety of vaccination to parents.
